HEAL JOO CHIAT CLINIC : the saga begins

Well... a new year heralds new beginnings for all of us...

For many of our friends this means:

1. New jobs as registrars in hospitals

2. Passing terrible post graduate examinations that will ALLOW them to do those new jobs

3. Getting married

4. Kids getting bigger going to school

5. HAVING KIDS! CONGRATS to Kenneth & Grace, Sara & Sugee, and all those PENDING...

Well.. for me.. the story starts with dear Pa and Ma deciding to invest in the property market.. so they purchase a shoplot in Joo Chiat.. it has now become the new HEAL JOO CHIAT CLINIC!

We are building the clinic from scratch, designing the layout, choosing floor tiles, measuring rooms to buy furniture and getting a decent store sign up! Fortunately, being a self owned clinic means that there will be a mini home office for us to chill out in...

What are we planning to do there ? Well, if things go well, it is intended to be a family clinic with procedural options, ie capacity to do minor surgery, aesthetic work and general care of people!

It will be a challenge for us.. if all fails, well I suppose we can blend in with the surrounds and open a cafe instead!

So check us out ! 48 Joo Chiat Place.. all are welcome! PRESENTING THE HEAL JOO CHIAT CLINIC!!

XMAS shopping!

Tis the season to be merry ... and time for the store registers to ring!!

We are not Christians, but somehow have adopted the tradition of gift giving and sharing... I think its in the spirit of giving and sharing, as well as the joy in shopping! Especially when its not for yourself... feels like you can be forgiven for spending the money. Of course there is the inherent challenge in finding the PERFECT gift for your loved ones... thank goodness it comes round only once a year though!

Of course, Orchard Road is a major hassle and mess of human traffic... good luck to those who left the shopping to the last minute!

We are having dinner on the 24th December... Pa, Ma, Chai ( and hopefully Han Ting) as well as Geok and MunHon. At the moment the plan is for popiah and roast chicken, but we shall see what happens in the end!

Hainan Mission trip:Song Heng Association

HAINAN MISSION TRIP 2007-12-10

This is an annual pilgrimage for the Hainanese Song Heng association in Singapore. A delegation of volunteers has been visiting Hainan Island in China every year for the past 3 years to perform surgery, see General Practice patients and visit the School for the Deaf. The mission site is at Wen Chang district hospital as well as the Song Heng village.

This is my 2nd visit, Chris’ and Madison’s 1st!! (well, as a hitchhiker in my belly!)

The trip starts on 9/12/2007

We take Tiger Airways flight TR 936 from the Budget Terminal, together with 60 other volunteers, a mixture of doctors, nurses, medical students and non medical support staff.

… the flight was scheduled to leave Singapore at 1245h, but after a series of delays we leave close to 2 PM. How would I rate Tiger Airways?? ... it pales in comparison to Virgin Airlines, as it does not offer any complimentary drinks and officially disallows food or drink to be brought in from outside! There is no entertainment, compared with individual LCD screens that Virgin America offers. But…it is budget and the tickets can get really cheap…

We arrive at Haikou international airport close to 6 PM, gather the luggage and take the mandatory group photo. After what seems like an interminable duration, everyone manages to pack into 3 chartered buses. During the madness of boarding passengers and baggage, the bus driver accidently activates the door, shutting onto Sister Goh’s hand! It was a blessing that she escaped unscathed apart from a rude shock.

Darkness has fallen by the time we get to Waika Hotel, the only 5 star establishment in town. We head straight for a banquet dinner which consisted of multiple dishes of duck, vegetable and soup. Surprisingly the omnipresent famous TOUGH HAINAN CHICKEN was absent! Dinner was quite good, but we were famished.

The day ended with a briefing for the group… A “special task force”( ie SUCKERS made of people under the age of 21)—was organised to leave at 0630h to prepare the village clinic for the doctors and nurses to run!

Day 2:

It was a TERRIBLE night… don’t get me wrong, the room was fantastic, beds were comfortable but then dear old Chris got a severe case of GASTRO!!

So basically we are up from like ??0430h , with him visiting the lavatory regularly!! And Madison wakes as well and starts to KICK real hard… she likes to do that on holidays, I notice!
so...out comes the Ciprofloxacin/imodium
Morning call then rings at 0630 on the dot, we drag ourselves up, get dressed and go down to brekkie…which seriously SUCKED..

Lets see: Plain congee ( which is actually great for Chris, ironically), some salted veg, mantou, fried noodle and some baked bun.

Then we all split up : 1 group to Wen Chang hospital ( Dr Foo Chee Liam, Dr Chong , Chris and Kai Rui-med student) and the rest of us head down to the village clinic.

We get to the clinic just before 0900h, and its not long before the crowds start and we begin to see patients. Its more organised this year, with different areas for :triage, BP/glucometer, consult and pharmacy. A minor operating suite is set up in the recently renovated wing.

There are 6 doctors this year, 2 per consult room. Ma and I are in one, Dr Lily Aw and Dr Chay are in the next and finally Dr Sebastian Wong and Dr Tham Siew Nee are in the last. Hainanese speaking nurses assist in language translation. The crowd builds up rapidly, but we manage to see everyone by 12 noon.

Lunch is at a village restaurant just 5 minutes away. Village food is standard fare: the infamous Wen Chang chicken (tough birds!), vegetables dripping in oil, fish steamed in oil/soy marinade, pig innards fried with vegetables... food arrives endlessly until plates are piled upon each other… the amount of wasted food is phenomenal.

The afternoon clinic starts again just before 2 PM and we work hard seeing everybody. After awhile, the complaints are pretty similar, with the top 6 being:

1. Osteoathritis ( ie back/leg/neck pain)
2. Soft tissue rheumatism ( ie thigh/calf/ hand pain)
3. some rashes ( mostly ezcema, some scabetic rashes )
4. eye complaints (dry eye, cataracts )
5. lumps/bumps: lipoma/osteoma/ganglions
6. PV discharge ( most likely thrush but we were unable to perform speculum exams )

After consultation, the patients proceed to the pharmacy to fill out the prescription.
The pharmacy is run by the medical students. Without doubt the top item had to be the ketotop plasters!

Pa ran the minor OT and was kept busy with the multiple lipomas and ganglions. Dr Tham and I ended the day by operating on a skin tag, naevus (nose) and a lipoma (forehead).

The bus takes us back to the Hotel for dinner, which is hosted by the Mayor of the town, and is a lavish multiple course dinner, including seafood, pork ribs and local delicacies. Our Minister, Mr Mah Bow Tan is a guest of Honour, and actually goes round the various tables toasting us all! And what would an official dinner be without the mandatory photo taking..!!

Day 3:

It was a bad night again, with my dear hubby suffering from gastro at 4 am again!

Breakfast is standard fare. Bleary eyed, we eat, then set off to the various locations…

At Wenchang village clinic, we arrive to a massive queue that had been building up since 5 AM!

But with the grace and hard work of all the volunteers, we actually manage to see everybody and break for lunch at 12noon! Lunch was at the SAME restaurant serving the SAME food as yesterday. But it probably is the BEST restaurant in town and had a half decent squat toilet.

Unfortunately, we had run out of medicines, so the afternoon clinic had to be severely shortened. The run ended with a handout of multivitamins and the local favourite: Ketotop plasters! It became rather chaotic when the handouts started, so that had to be halted within 5minutes!

Finally, with everything packed up, we bid our goodbyes to the villagers for the year, and took the bus back to the hotel. Some volunteers decide to visit the school for the Deaf, but Ma, Chai and I decided to go check out the local spa… Bali Dao Massage parlour, a 4 storey building dedicated to the art of massage, spas and hair care! We all got the foot massage, which included a back/arm and leg massage as well. Chai and Ma had ginger/herb mix added to their foot water, while I had some milk ?sago to mine.

Unfortuntely the preggy me ended up with a a half baked massage, the masseur “panicked” on finding out that I was 6months gone! At least my 2 other companions got a thorough squeeze. The 3 of us were in the same room aptly named “Malaysia” with a TV set that was stuck at 1 channel. Chai’s masseur was really chatty! Talking non stop throughout the entire hour long session!

Dinner was at Feng Yuan restaurant in the city centre, we were reunited with the rest of the group. There was an explosion of meat related dishes and as usual food was piled sky high on the dining table… the mandatory Wenchang chicken, ‘jia fu’mixed veg, pork ribs, steamed prawns, multiple vegetable dishes which we couldn't really identify!
It was topped off with Karaoke, the local city councillor enthusiastically taking the stage and screaming into the microphone! I think no one else really appreciated it and we all cleared out within the next 15minutes!

The nights are pretty boring, after wandering around the neighbouring street stalls we headed back to the hotel. We took the local transportation “tuk tuk” style, costing only 3 RMB per vehicle. The hotel was pretty hopeless too, smokers everywhere in the café downstairs, so we were directed to the 5th floor tea place where we had drinks in a private room …

Day 4:

Morning call occurred without fail at 0630 h AGAIN! Everyone was down for brekkie by 0730 H. Then the chaos started again as everyone was off to different places… we manage to get a car to take us down to Sanya ..so we finally leave Wenchang at 0930h.

The car ride down was quite an adventure! Of course safety is not really a top priority for this guy, over taking whenever he liked, not wearing seat belts etc… then he had to take us to 2 commercial places to ‘visit’ and buy stuff.. the first place sold deer products, and had cruelly locked up deer to show off to tourists.. the second place had coffee and other products… we buy some coffee related stuff…

When we finally arrive at Sanya, the driver then takes us to a seafood place …Where we probably got ripped off… When we get to the Sanya Marriott it was nearly 3 PM!

The Marriott came as a relief… after checking in we troop down to the pool and GET WET! The water was freezing cold though… but the Marriott has a fantastic pool, with a water massage feature, floating banana boat, water volleyball net and basketball net.

Dinner was at the Marriott café, where we scored first rate seats to watch a private event occurring on the front lawn. There was live music and singing as they introduced the Ford S-Max car. To get an even better view, we then adjorned to the View Lounge on the 3rd Floor lobby for drinks and dessert. The event ended with a spectacular firework display.

Day 5:

Our first really good sleep in the past few days! Chris and I have a king sized bed in a pretty decent sized room that comes with a lovely toilet…

We all head down to check out the gym, which turns out to be pretty small … there are 3 Cybex treadmills, 2 bicycles, 1 stepper and 1 elliptical trainer. And a small selection of free as well as mounted weights…

Breakfast was a continental buffet at the cafe, the selection of food was pretty good with made to order eggs, pancakes and even smoothies! Service is smooth and efficient and I was impressed that a straw was sent to my table when I asked for one at the smoothie counter.

After a scrumptious fill we all head down to the clubhouse. The sun was out so we took a dip in the deliciously cold water. The clubhouse had a selection of other activities : table tennis, Foosball, snooker and a putting green, but everything was chargeable! So.. sunblock on, into the water …

We spent the entire morning in the water, enjoying the multiple Jacuzzi like massages, moving on to water basketball and even water volleyball… unfortunately Ma sustained a mild sprain of her thumb from an attempted pass at the ball…

Happy Hour at the beach side cafe starts at 5Pm daily with a live 4man band playing by the side…we certainly made good use of the hour! One for one drinks till 6Pm..

After tea of fish and chips, burger and satay we headed over to the club house where Chai showed his forte at Foosball… he single handedly beat Chris and I at ALL games by scores of 10 to1, 8 to 2 etc…! We then moved onto the snooker arena and played for another hour or so… Pa and Ma later joined us and started a game of table tennis.

Exhausted, we ended the day with dinner at Indochine, the hotel Vietnamese restaurant. Crisp tangy mango seafood salad, rich chicken curry, grilled succulent pork ribs, roasted honey duck breast and a steaming bowl of pho filled us up nicely… we were the only guests at the restaurant so service was truly personalised and efficient. For dessert we adjourned to the View Lounge where the band and female soloist was performing again. Of course we had to have the delectably moist and dense chocolate mud cake served with handmade vanilla ice cream as well as a slice of their signature apple pie. The night wind was quite cool, and together with the sound of the female vocalist made for a splendid way to end our trip…

THE LAST DAY: trip back to Singapore

We were sad to leave the confines of the Marriott Sanya resort and spa, but truly refreshed and ready to go home to reality.. and work..

After breakfast at the cafe, we checked out and boarded the hotel limousine to embark on the 3 hour journey to Haikou International Airport for the Tiger Airway flight home. What a tremendous change from the journey to the Marriott! The transport was fully air conditioned, seat belts for everyone and a bottle of water to start the journey! Just a pity it lacked a small LCD screen to view movies from!

We get to the airport in good time, and find that we could only check in an hour later! Really strange arrangement... off we go to get lunch at Ajisen Ramen : noodles, fried rice, beef rolled with enoki mushrooms and some cha siew.. When we finally get to check in there is a massive crowd waiting to do the same! Pa is pretty light footed and manage to move fast and secure us seats on board pretty quickly!

After a 31/2 hour ride on flight TR 937 we finally arrive back at 2030h... Geok comes and picks us up and we pop over to Auntie Kim's in Joo chiat for the famous XO fried Hokkien noodles..yum... thick yellow noodles swimming in generous portions of seafood and a rich savoury sauce... then its home for Zzzzzzz.... EXHAUSTED...

That was the 6 day trip in its essence... i had great fun and met plenty of interesting people on the trip.. my only regret is not being able to have a really nice spa treat at the Marriott! (mainly because of the pregnancy-- makes it a waste to have half strength massage !)

Shopping for baby Madison

I thought this was a topic worthy of mention.. one day I hope she will read this and realize how much parents truly love and adore their children... not to mention the excitement and anxiety they bring on so early!

So it goes... you get pregnant, spend 1st trimester either suffering from all day sickness ( severity variable)/ spotting (not me) , and moodiness (severe) ... all the while most choose not to TELL because of the EXTREME FEAR of miscarriage... so there is NO shopping and you feel TERRIBLE...

Then the scans go by, everything settles, and then you start to surf the web ... bingo! EVERYONE is shopping... from cots to strollers to rompers(onesies) to breast pumps.. endless lists... and you feel lost...

So I check out the shops.. ok.. surely it can't be that hard to look for cots or strollers...how wrong could I be!

In the end, I gather that the main deciding factor, like most things in life, is the $$ Dough... mega $$ buys you Rolls Royce of prams like Stokke, Peg Perago or even gold plated Maclaurens (S$18,000), Stokke cribs (S$1800) and Ferrari car seats that last you all of 12 months!

Clothing for the precious bub? From baby Armani to Carters.. take your pick... of course the baby Burberry's always looks SOOOO CUTE... especially for the GIRLS... boys clothes generally SUCK.

And then the 'rest' : nursing gear, nappy gear, rocking machines, things to dangle, special change thingys, wardrobe, hangers the list is endless... when all the baby really does is eat, sleep and poo.. I don't think she really cares what she sits in.. does she?

So.. at the moment, Chris and I have the 'shop and see' down pat, we've got ?enough clothes from US, I think WE ( not Madison) really like the Quinny Speedi Jogger( S700), although its like 11.5kg, is HUGE but COOL, as well as the more compact Quinny.. (can we buy 2??) Although... online stores in Oz show the Schwinn Jogger is AUD400... so...

And Cribs? well... I like the Stokke one... but that's all of $1800...

Maybe Santa will buy it for us?

BABYMOON : finale

Every fairytale has to come to an end and ours did, beginning with another dreaded flight on Virgin America back to LA...in all honesty, the seats on the plane are fairly comfortable, the service is acceptable but the air pressure just dreadful.. I had to suffer from a dry nose and throat all the way back again.

Anyway... we arrive back in LA in 1 piece, hired a small car for the duration of the trip and made our way back to Hotel Belamar... this time only needing a map rather than the GPS !! Yippee !we were getting FAMILIAR!!

Our room at the Hotel this time wasn't as big, but still reasonable... we were STARVING, so we stopped on the way to Hotel Belamar to grab a burger at CARL's JNR. We tried the massive Portobello Mushroom burger, which was delectable! Great patty, fresh vegetables and succulent mushroom.. way better than WHITE CASTLE.

This leg of the trip we took it easy, went to Manhattan beach, then to Venice beach to check out the world -famous Muscle beach, street basketball and the rollerblading chicks.. Muscle beach was quite empty but it did not disappoint!

On the last day before we flew back, we met up with CAROLINE LEE and her dear son JOSHUA, at Marina del Ray. She lives in a ground floor apartment with her husband Kenlip... we bought turkish lunch over, then took a jaunt to Venice Canals to visit the ducks with Joshua ( in a pram ) ... Joshua was going through a truck and plane phase... every trunk that went past : he would shout--TRUCK!!

We finally bid a sad goodbye to Caroline and Joshua at 1600h to leave for the airport before the horrendous traffic started...

Of course we get to the airport nice and early, quickly check in ( because we were afraid of the thought of security checks) breeze through... and then....there was NOTHING in the check- in area! No shops, cafes or entertainment, not even a TV screen... boy did we regret making our way in early.. so Madison gets her babyplus lesson...

AND FINALLY... was it a relief to board an SQ plane, read the STRAITS TIMES, and anticipate a great flight back! It was a really long flight back and we were exhausted by the time we arrived back in Singapore.

OF COURSE.. I have to give Changi International Airport a mention: WORLD'S BEST AIRPORT! Extensive facilities, friendly service and prompt movement of people! Home sweet home...

THE PREGNANCY Part 3: 2nd trimester

They don't say the 2nd trimester is the best part for nothing....

Firstly, you start to feel 'normal' again... although by this stage 'normality' is a subjective sensation that you start to assume, since it's been over 3 months since you were REALLY your old self...

The APPETITE returns with a vengeance, mood improves SIGNIFICANTLY and your brain stops acting like a b*tch so much. Of course the waistline disappears for good now, but at least you start to feel pregnant, and accept that you can no longer take the physical punishment of the past. Then you slowly understand why it takes 10months to grow a baby... I think it's to allow us to ADJUST to things so we don't end up suffering permanently with ADJUSTMENT DISORDERS..!

Our First TRUE SCARE: we return all blissful and happy from babymoon, only to hear that dear grandparents (AKA Pa and Ma) had contracted what they thought was PARVOVIRUS B19... that's like a bug that can insidiously infect the poor fetus, afflict it with fetal anaemia, myocarditis or worse than that.... the D word...

So I PANIC... get serology to check for exposure... and WAIT like 1 week for the results... in the mean time... keep an eye out for baby movements...

Which brings me to the next topic! Movements.. the thing all mothers to be anxiously await, discuss and pore over... it truly is a miracle... of course it doesn't help if SO MANY women on worldwide forums seem to FEEL movements at ???14-16 weeks!!! And there I was, all of 18-19 weeks NOTHING!!!! of course my medical brain that barely now exists, reminds me that 1st timers don't feel anything till 20 weeks... but !!!!

Anyway... Madison finally makes her presence known at 19+ weeks!!! It started early in the morning, I finally felt a little flutter !!! It happened again, so I knew it had to be her... not GAS!!!

Ok.. back to PARVOV.... so far so good.. serology negative... then dear ol Madi decides to get sleepy... PANIC... so I rebook the gynae appointment... thanks to Chris who probably had enough of me whining EVERYDAY...

So we make a rushed visit to TPS at KKH on the 29.11.2007 ... and the WAIT was tremendous... we arrive at 1600h, register, urine test done ..by the time we get to see her for 10s it was past 1720h... and all of S$100!!! But it was worth it..

Of course, the mandatory belly pics.... and baby plus.. hopefully Madison will be a content, rapidly latching good kid... hey its 1-2 hours EVERYDAY!!! and the noise... repetitive ear strain...! btw babyplus is a heartbeat replicating machine that i strap on daily for her listening pleasure.. supposed to increase fetal calmness and ability to attend to things later in life... we will let you know!

BABYMOON Part 5 : New York City

Next leg of the trip... NEW YORK CITY!

The flight was less than perfect... it was a small plane and was poorly pressurized so I ended up with a terrible headache and dry air passages. I couldn't sleep AT all on the overnight trip... was sooo glad to arrive at JFK airport...

Then the chaos started...first, get the bags.. noo first, find the carousel that carried our bags, lug them while looking for ground transportation ... then, eventually find the taxi stand, and HIT the COLD !! BURR... and BLUR... no sleep plus jet lag ..BAD combination..

Fortunately we make it to Manhattan... AND THEN THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION... We finally get to the DREAM HOTEL at about 1000 am ... deposit our bags at the hotel... then give JONATHAN LIANG a call... we haven't seen him or Robin for the past few years, but he was really nice to offer to take us around during our stay... he works at Alliance Bernstein which is just a few blocks away from our hotel...

So... NYC... we spent 4 days there.. did the touristy things.... Empire state building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, NYSE and the BULL... the annual Christmas tree had arrived from Oakland and we trouped down to Rockefeller centre to stare at the poor tree... along with plenty of Americans... the ice skating ring had also just been set up.

We were in town for their annual Veteran's Day, and caught a glimpse of the parade down 5th Avenue.. marching bands, veterans, children and pom pom girls all in tow. Watching the veterans did make me sad, thinking of the human casualty that results from war... Robin works with these veterans as a psychologist, and she tells us that many suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and are not able to function in society despite treatment.

Oh we did make it to Magnolia bakery ! The chocolate cup cake was not bad at all, fairly moist and chocolaty although Chris managed to MANGLE the cake before we got to eat it!!! They sold cakes and desserts other than cupcakes too, and seem to be highly popular with locals and tourists alike. The official 'sex and the city' tour takes you past the shop but they don't seem to stop to allow customers to purchase the cupcakes

Jonathon and Robin hosted us to a fantastic Italian dinner at Becco's ... great pasta and service.. We also caught a stand-up comedy by Nick Griffin... besides him, there were 3 or 4 comedians and the bar was PACKED! The only trouble was that you were FORCED to buy 2 drinks each, on top of cover price...as well as leave a tip...USA for you...

BEST PART OF NYC?

I liked Central Park--a fantastic piece of
greenery in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city... there's a skating ring, mini castle, lakes and reservoir and horse carriages that go partly around the park...

Foodwise... well, the highlight would have been the Bouchon bakery cafe at Columbus Circle, also the fantastic muffins and brownies at au bon pain, a chain bakery that was found quite commonly...

WORST PART??

THE Food disaster? Definitely White Castle... to think we MADE the trip to NYC to check out the place! Chris dutifully researched the address, we trooped down after watching basketball at Madison Square Gardens... WHAT A RUDE SHOCK... 53c burgers made with 2mm thick ??foreign looking patties, covered in grease and carcinogens... after 1 bite I insisted on dumping the other burger... no way would it make the passage into our gut or coronary arteries or to Madison..!

Oh yes, we did catch the basketball game : Heats vs Knicks.. quite a low scoring game.. but the atmosphere was phenomenal, the seats were grummy and the popcorn...well , salty.. but Chris got his wish...!

BABYMOON Part 4: Las Vegas

welcome to the land of gambling, sex, drugs and shopping.... LAS VEGAS.. excesses GALORE
Day 1:

well, it was mostly a leftover of the day from San Francisco, we arrive at 6PM, the airport is CRAZY... disorganised and even had JACKPOT machines in the check-in area! talk about desperate for gambling...

We finally get our bags, get a cab, navigate our way with the 'blur' cabby to our suite-only hotel... The Meridian Suites.all good, they check us in,Darrel ( the porter) takes us in a buggy to the apartment... and THEN...

Apartment 1:
1. Internet not working
So we go for dinner ( which sucked because we were OFF the strip and ended up in Cafe Bellagio), return and try to change rooms...

Apartment2:
2. Then we find apartment number 2 : internet and telephone not working.. so I say... forget it, we don't really need the phone tonight, let them fix it tomorrow..

so I try and shower... then we can't get the tap to work! Of course I say, " oh we should CALL them..." but guess what !! THE PHONE DOESN"T WORK!!! So poor Chris has to make a trip down to reception (5min walk) ... in the mean time Darrel had sent a technician down to try and fix the phone.. and the guy shows me how to turn the tap on ( ie PULL the tap out, rather than twist or anything else!!) WHY DON"T THEY JUST LEAVE INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Day 2:

We awake to a beautifully warm day, and decide that we needed a CAR! Fortunately ENTERPRISE car rental was next door at the Westin Hotel. We get a small car this time, but insurance amounted to half the rental cost !

Finally manage to get the complete tour of Vegas by cruising down the STRIP, where there were many people walking around in shorts and Tshirts... mostly pot -bellied Caucasians, or middle aged Asians.. surprisingly there were quite a few people in wheelchairs and motorised scooters around...

We checked out the shopping outlets( again ) but the variety is not as good as the LA ( Camarillo) or city shopping (SF)...however, we HAD to look for winter stuff for the next leg --NEW YORK!

We also had to check out the M&M museum, where you can obviously see the kid in Chris!

Day3:

More shopping in the morning, we finally bought warm jackets from Calvin Klein--fantastic deals.. leather jacket for USD 100! We tried to get lunch at BOUCHON at the Venetian, but they were not open for lunch... so we booked dinner for the next night.
Wandered down the strip, got tickets for a topless revue FANTASY at half price tix for USD 30 pp including taxes. The show was at Luxor... the one shaped like a pyramid with lights that highlight airborne insects /? bats at night...!

Well.. more about the topless show: choreography was not bad, some of the girls were frankly too thin, but they had toned legs... not all had great boobs.... there was a group of Asian guys sitting above us, but they were JET LAGGED... some were falling asleep ..well, only before the girls started.... The show consists mostly of singing and dancing, with individual mini 'shows' based on a theme.

Day 4:

Most memorable meal at Bouchon's in Venetian...Great service! We started with crusty bread accompanied by ? french butter (that's what we like to think!)..
Starters :we shared a platter of baked garlic escargots, crispy and succulent...

Mains: Chris had Joue de Boeuf, slow braised beef cheeks with French green lentils, while I had the scallops special.. We shared a side of sauteed spinach and finished the meal with Creme Caramel... delectable. The Caramel was lightly flamed, with a golden crust of sugar, and sinfully rich moist buttery custard.

Well, we ended the night with RAPID ROULETTE.. good news was that we didn't lose any $... minimum bets in Vegas Casinos are USD 10 for most tables.. and the gambling floor was EXTREMELY smoky... makes me appreciate CROWN casino for once!

Day5:

Last day in Vegas, we drive out in search for Babies R us on Rainbow boulevard... It has a FANTASTIC range of baby gear, from clothing to bedding to strollers and educational tools!! We buy the Baby Bjorn Air, a set of Carter's onesies and some more Baby Guess tops... lucky Madison!!It was a real torture not buying more stuff, but we couldn't carry so much with 1 more leg of travel to go...

We return the rental car and get a lift with the rental people to the airport (which is 1 mile from the STRIP)! He tells us that celebrity spottings are not uncommon in this part of town.

well... the airport is a sea of chaos... and we are anxious to clear customs ( shoes off, bags thoroughly checked and yes, some people FRISKED) .. and board the Virgin America flight 776 to get to San Francisco ( arrive 2015h) , then transfer to flight 239 bound for New York, leaving at 2305h, arriving at 0810 h the next day...

BABYMOON Part 3 : San Francisco

Day 2 in SF:

We wake up and go to Fisherman's wharf for breakfast... but alas! Not much was open! So we end up like locals, at the STARBUCKS cafe for hot chocolate and sandwiches... Melvin and Daniel were off to church somewhere out in the suburbs so they took the car... It was a glorious sunny SF morning...

Next up... the world's most crooked street: Lombard street.. oh before I forget... we did end up having Chowder at Boudins for lunch... in a sourdough bread bowl on the waterfront cafe near the seagulls... lots of other people having Dungenees crab too.. Chris had the chili in a bread bowl... chunkful of beans and mince...

Back onto Chinatown for the busiest day of shopping... fresh fruit, Chinese veg and groceries...and the most delectable char siew, dripping with honey and oil, fresh from the butcher... YUM. We passed elderly Chinese folk doing martial arts, qigong and chatting in the parks... just like in the movies!

By the time we finally caught up with Melvin again it was time for dinner... at the famous CHEESECAKE factory... in downtown Macy's building... it was PACKED. And the portions: GIGANTNORMOUS!! check out the chocolate cake... we had beef ribs, Caesar salad, pasta and calamari rings...

Day 3 in SF:

The next morning, Chris and I headed out to Alcatraz prison, while Melvin and Daniel went out for shopping..We take the ferry onto the island, where there is a complimentary audio tour as well as some live tours( which are pretty good, on ESCAPES)...the ferry leaves every 30 minutes so you basically take your time on the island itself and return whenever you wish.

Finally we return back at 1130H...supposed to meet the guys at the hotel at 12... but guess what !! THEY WERE LATE!!! SO... then the MAD rush to fill the rental car with petrol, navigate our way to the airport, drop the 2 guys off and then return the damned car ( the rental places are NOT AT the airport), LUG our luggage back to the airport, check in and COLLAPSE... all while 20+ weeks PREGGY!! Thank goodness for STRONG abs!!

We said GOODBYE to Melvin and Daniel, they were off to Singapore (WORK) , Chris and I were off to PART 4: Las Vegas!!!

Must add though... Melvin and Daniel did make a good 'couple'.... !!!!

BABYMOON Part 2 : roadtrip!

Melvin and Daniel were done with their radio-oncology conference... we packed up for the drive from LA to SF, with an overnighter on the road...

We start pretty late... so by the time we reach our 1st stop at Santa Barbara ..we were STARVING... ??2 pm or so... we didn't quite anticipate the traffic from LA! Roads were of reasonable quality though..

Santa Barbara is famous for its upmarket lifestyle, horse-riding (THE brand) and rich people playing golf at picturesque courses.

So we stop at a quaint cafe... lunch was the usual deal of chips, salad, sandwiches and pasta... unfortunately Melvin had REAL trouble with the cafe toilet.. don't ask me why, the ladies were FINE...

After lunch, we head straight back on the road...
THEN TRAFFIC JAM!!! Nearly fall asleep on the wheel...

ALAS... it starts to get dark by the time we make any headway along the road... we take route 101 ( it would have been nicer to take Highway 1 which is the coastal road, kind of like the Malaysian old one- lane highway, but next to the ocean)... Melvin drives the major leg through the darkness... and we manage to take a picture in the twilight! We blizzed through Hearst Castle, Big and little Sur...

FINALLY we end up in Monterey Bay for dinner and night stop... and the adventure to look for ACOMODATION began... 1st stop was the Spa hotel... which was unfortunately BOOKED out! Then the Mariott, which was unfortunately TOO expensive ... USD 400 /night (after taxes). So we settle for the good ol' motel: El Dorado... USD 80 ! Which included 'breakfast'! Chris and I scored the 'suite' with a romantic fireplace, which actually worked, but didn't really keep you warm. The beds were slightly soft though.

Dinner we JUST had to go to good ol Denny's, which is now obsolete in Singapore.. a really sweet nerdy waiter (can't remember his name now) who was attentive and quite friendly served us, so in the end we had to make sure he got his tip...
The next morning: Monterey Bay Aquarium-- great place for kids..we got to see seal and deep fish feeding. UNFORTUNATELY, we ended up with a PARKING fine of USD 50... who'd have thought they booked people on weekends !

Then off to Google in San Jose, California: a truly great place to work.. everything's free! we meet up with Melvin's relatives who kindly take us on the grand tour of Google...and scored some free drinks on the house! They had really cute kids, who just had their flu vaccinations that morning. San Jose is 1 hour away from SF.

BACK ON THE ROAD...
Finally, we arrive at long last in SAN FRANCISCO!!! Land of the Golden Gate Bridge... we cautiously navigate our way to the MANDARIN ORIENTAL hotel, valet parked our car ( for an astonishing USD 50/night!!) and then...LUXURY !! THE NICEST bathroom in the entire trip.. MOLTON BROWN toiletries, room cleaning TWICE a day.

Melvin and Daniel decide to go to Fisherman's Wharf while Chris and I check out the hotel, then go downtown.. SHOPPING: Banana Republic.. Gap... Macy's ...where we buy some really cool baby gear! Baby Guess, Polo Ralph Lauren... it took REAL willpower to STOP.

Then we head down to Chinatown for some desperately needed HOT CHINESE food... century egg congee, char siew and duck with COOKED vegetables... I had enough of salads and chips. Curious thing is that the OFFICIAL Chinatown starts at the usual chinese looking gantry, but the REAL place where chinese people shop and eat is actually 1-2 streets away! I was determined to eat at a place where it was half authentic, and we search until we found a place where there were at least some chefs eating, where ordering was done in half baked Mandarin and Cantonese...and the food... at least Crystal Jade quality.. so I was happy..

BABYMOON Part 1: getting there

LOS ANGELES.... MANHATTAN BEACH..HOTEL BELAMAR...JOE'S CAFE

Well.. that's the latest craze among us Generation ??X or Y

We weren't really planning a holiday for the rest of this year, apart from maybe visiting Melbourne again.. we were saving up for our next ski trip, probably Niseko again in Jan/Feb 2008..

So.... with EDD in March 2008... we weren't going to make it ! PANIC...

Then we remember Melvin Chua saying something about a trip to the USA... so we thought... why not.. go somewhere we weren't likely to go for a REALLY long time...

BABYMOON USA!!!

31.10.2007 to 17.11.2007

31.10.2007: we fly direct with SIA to LA... oh my goodness... 16 hr flight... but thank goodness for executive economy... we meet Dr Lim See Hian (head of emergency at SGH) on board! At the lounge at the back of the plane!
Arrive in LA, pick up car: a Chrysler 'premium' car...
thank goodness for GPS... takes us directly to the Hotel Belamar where we check into RM 313. Room is nice, has a small lounge area too..

Then we met up with Melvin for dinner at Universal City, Bubba Gump restaurant, which is pretty much fashioned like TGIF or Hard Rock Cafe... we had shrimp, roast chicken, chips... slightly cheesy, waiters dressed like ?? Forest Gump, music pretty loud, decor quite garish... but food was fresh and crispy!

The thing about LA is really the distance between places which we GROSSLY underestimated... took us an hour to get from place to place, the traffic is terrible on the highways... I really don't understand how people can tolerate it on a daily basis! Cars CRAWL on the freeways at all times of the day.

But otherwise, I really like LA for the beach, we stayed near Manhattan beach and managed to go there everyday, watch surfers, beautiful bodies jogging by and admire gorgeous beach houses... reminded me of Bali's Kuta beach, without the searing hot sun and hawkers..

THE PREGNANCY Part 2: breaking news

Ultrasounds...

so.. on Sunday 08.07.2007, we break the news to Pa and Ma... Took awhile before Ma finally gets round to organising a scan for me with Prof John Tee at KKH... guess she's not used to having to do these things... got me a little upset.. but it could be the RAGING hormones...

SCANS AND MORE

Well... that's just the beginning!! Who could have thought that something so small could cause so much STRESS!!

First scan 18.07.2007: nothing much was seen... only intrauterine growth sac, no fetal parts seen... so? repeat in 1 week!

Second scan 25.07.2007: ok..... now the sac is bigger, and a ?? faint heart seen ?? definite fetal pole... repeat scan in 2 weeks!! By now I can think of nothing but the baby-to-be!

Third scan..07.08.2007 well... now definite heart, but still small...8 weeks... good news was the next scan not till week 12 for the First Trimester Screening at 12 weeks!

Basically spent the entire month in agony, anxiously checking for bleeding or cramps..morning sickness...which on one hand I did not wish to have, but on the other hand it reassures that the pregnancy is taking off...

Well.. I suppose I got pretty lucky, 1st trimester was mild by industry standards... mainly severe sleepiness and evening inability to eat much.. some nausea if I ate "healthy" or tried to eat my own cooking... or foods that I used to wolf down...

CRAVINGS:

YES!! for all things UNHEALTHY... Mos burgers, hot dogs, CHIPS!! anything salty and fried.. KFC yum... vegetable.. YUCK...

BUT in exchange.. I was completely off my usual ice-cream, chocolates and anything sweet... apples REALLY turned me OFF... hence no apples for the first 20+ weeks! Unbelievable!

Well... 04.09.2007 :we passed the first trimester screen with flying colours... finally a GREAT scan where we saw Madison for the first time properly. Dr Kenneth Quek at TPS did the honours... and Madison was soo co-operative, let us see the nuchal translucency and the nasal bone after awhile! Heng Fok's wife was also there! Expecting their 1st !

The eagerly awaited fetal anomaly scan on 30.10.2007 couldn't come fast enough... for some reason, everyone had predicted we were going to get a BOY... so it was a mild surprise that Madison was in there instead.. but we were HAPPY... everything was GREAT!!!

And the best part... we were OFF TO BABYMOON 1 the very next day!! 31.10.2007....

THE PREGNANCY Part 1

Where do I start??

ok...well... I suppose I had decided awhile ago that I would get pregnant and have a kid by 30...

I've never been a "kid friendly" person... didn't really fancy getting pregnant, going through delivery and destruction of the pelvic zone or the responsibility of looking after another being other than myself or Chris! But Chris has always wanted a little version of him...so....

I went off the COCP... and WAITED.... that's where it got a little SCARY .. when things didn't automatically "happen"... for some reason I'd always imagined it would happen ??immediately for some reason!

well... let's see... July 2007: sitting for GDFM exams.. really stressed and staying at home to MUG..ie study and study till your brains just about pop out...so we weren't really expecting anything to happen..

Then the usual story... hey... missed a period... boobs getting SORE... time to test... exams just over... probably going to be ONE line....

07.07.2007: BINGO!! 2 lines.... I couldn't believe it!

Then comes the full on PANIC: WILL IT CHANGE BACK???
So... off to the pharmacy and buy some more kits.... guess where they sell the CHEAPEST pregnancy test kits ever!!! TTSH retail pharmacy! So I buy like 4 sets... and immediately repeat...

VACATIONS

HOLIDAYS...

Hm.... our favourite activity

Top of our list:
SKIING
1. Whistler, Vancouver, Canada: argueably the best location for the varied ski slopes, great instructors and fantastic village life/apres ski!... we were there in Winter, 2004.

2. Niseko, Sapporo (Hokkaido), Japan: proximity to Singapore is a major plus... AND the best thing has to be the POWDER snow... metres of it... we've been there twice already, and can't wait to take Madison (?) there soon....

3. Hakuba, Nagano, Japan: easy to get there from Tokyo. Just pop onto the Bullet train and you're there in under 2 hours( i think)... not as much powder, but still fantastic ski slopes and great food...

4. Falls Creek, Mt Buller and Mt Hotham.. Down Under ( Melbourne, Australia ): not great snow, but that's where we picked up our ski feet!!

5. Queenstown, New Zealand: well, what can I say.. we picked a spectacularly BAD season... when we were flying just above the mountain range... brown capped mountain tops!!! The trip turned out ok though... we took tours, hiked... had really great food.

FOODIE TRIPS:

Has to be good ol Melbourne... for our fix of Vietnamese cuisine, good Yum Cha, and great Italian/ Modern Australian food...

1. Langtons: now closed, sadly, in a little known corner of Little Flinders.... I was really sad when I read that they were closing this year ....

2. Brown's Bouchon: also sadly closed a few years ago.. Chris really loves the mashed potato there....

3. Thy Thy2: for our fix of Vietnamese broken rice, pho and salads...

4. Donovans: at St Kilda beach... thankfully still surviving... the best fish and chips, modern Australian food

5. Shark Fin Inn : Good Yum Cha, great for Sunday brunch with Mummy, Neil and Anthony

6. Casa Del gelato: we think the best Italian gelato in Melbourne.. they do so well they close during the winter season!

7. Brunetti: next in line for gelato in winter

8. Bratwurst shop in Victoria Market

9. Albert Park Deli in South Melbourne for the best pies, brunches and salads...

HOW WE HOOKED UP

OUR WEDDING

My goodness... its seems like eons ago now... those early innocent days ...

The PROPOSAL:

I don't know how Chris planned it, but it was truly romantic ( at least by his standards!!) during the school days... message in a homebaked lamington, ring of sapphire in a white gold band and proposal at the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne...

The WEDDINGS:

Kota Bahru:
Dinner with Chris' grandparents' friends... and Karaoke to top it off...

Finally... the one we had been planning all year: Melbourne
Dinner at Werribee Zoo, with a non religious wedding ceremony... bridesmaids and grooms... karaoke(again) but with our friends... our end of year graduation dinner had to be postponed because of our wedding dinner!!!Grooms: Jeremy, Alex, Vishesh. My Bridesmaids: Cheryl, Janette and Selene.

HONEYMOON:

Splendid Bali... we stayed at the Four Seasons , Ubud... at a private villa, complete with a private plunge pool... I think after that ..... hotels are never the same again... highly recommended for ALL couples...
